Hello Hope Springs Journal readers! Welcome to our first ever Makeup Monday! Like I said in my previous post, Important Update, this week is all about ideas, tips, and hacks. So, I thought I’d start the week off right with a natural makeup routine. This routine literally takes me five minutes every day. It’s cheap, you can get all the products from your local Walmart, and it looks like you’re not even wearing any makeup at all. Don’t forget to follow me on social media @hope.springs.journal.
Step One: Apply a tinted moisturizer with SPF
This is an important step to the natural, otherwise known as “No Makeup,” makeup look. This is basically a three-in-one, moisturizer, sunscreen, and foundation. However, this is very lightweight, so if you have redness, or acne prone skin you might need to put on additional foundation after. I will list my favorite foundation as well. The tinted moisturizer I have is the Neutrogena Protect + Tint Tinted Moisturizer, SPF 30. It comes in five different shades that can pretty much match any skin type. Of course, this shouldn’t be used as your only sunscreen if you’re going to be exercising, sweating, or in the sun for more than two hours, but for a regular day in school or work it is very highly recommended. This also acts as a primer or a base for the rest on your makeup. This product can be found at Walmart for $8.47.
Step Two: Apply concealer with salicylic acid to blemishes and acne
This step is completely optional, but this is a key step to my routine because I am at the age where my skin is like a magnet to acne. The product I use for this is Neutrogena SkinClearing Blemish Concealer. This product only comes in two shades, but it doesn’t matter if it totally matches your skin or not because I always put a regular concealer that matches my skin over it. It has a slightly yellow tint which color corrects for redness, concealing acne very successfully. Oh, but it just gets better. It has 0.5% salicylic acid in it to help clear the spots while it’s concealing them. It doesn’t overdry your skin, but it’s still very important to moisturize daily. It’s $7.57 at Walmart.
Step 3: Apply Concealer
Next, I use a concealer under my eyes, on any redness, and over acne. The concealer I use is NYX Professional Makeup HD Photogenic Concealer Wand. This product comes in twenty-three different shades, including three color correcting colors: lavender, yellow and green. For only $6, it’s totally worth trying.
Step 4: Setting Spray
This step is pretty self explanatory, but this step is very important in preventing flakiness and a longer lasting look. I use the Milani Make It Last Setting Spray, Prime + Correct + Set. You can get it for as little as $9. This product isn’t very big so it only lasts a couple months, but the results are very reliable.
Step 5: Brows
The amount of time used for this step may vary depending on the shape and fullness of your brows. Mine are pretty full and an okay shape, so all I have to do is brush through them with a spoolie and set them with gel. The product I use for this is the Ulta Beauty Brow Shaping Gel. I got mine in a trial set, so my picture doesn’t exactly match the link, but it’s the same product. It’s sold for $10 and it lasts quite a while. It works very well, keeping your brows in place all day. It is clear so if you don’t have as full of brows as some, Ulta Beauty has a similar product with a tint.
Step 6: Curl Lashes
This step is completely optional, but if your lashes are at all flat and/or short, you might want to consider giving it a try. Especially for a “No Makeup” makeup look, you don’t want to add a ton of eye makeup because of all the makeup, this shows the most. Curling your lashes is quick, easy, and product free. However, if you want an even more natural appearance, try using eyelash serum or vaseline to grow your lashes overnight. I personally have not tried these yet so don’t take my word for it, but I’ve heard that these are ways to grow your lashes and make them more healthy looking. Eyelash curlers run anywhere from $2-$10, and it’s not something you’ll need to replace often, so it’s a good investment if it’s something you’re looking into.
Now, you’re basically done, just finish off the look with a nice clear gloss, neutral lip color, or lip balm to give your lips that soft, moisturized appearance. You can even get these products at the dollar store, and it only takes a couple seconds to apply.
If you’re looking for more these are some of my favorites:
Five minutes later and you’re done. You might have wondered, “Why do all this when we’re not even going out, let alone even seeing anybody?!” Well, this is your chance to order a bit more glam online, and nail your own signature look, coming back better than you left.
This concludes my 5-minute daily natural drugstore makeup routine. Feel free to contact me or comment with any questions, content requests, or ideas you may have. Follow me on social media @hope.springs.journal. Come back tomorrow to see what I’ve been doing during quarantine.
